New Player Guide
Hello and welcome to Jiroc’s Gaming Servers. We are excited that you have decided to become a member and look forward to all the adventures you will have while you are here. Our community is a special place where you can meet people from all over the world. It is not uncommon for our members to become good friends and all of us have many exciting tales about our adventures together. The one thing to remember is that you’re not alone. Valheim can be a scary place but from now on you have a community to interact, explore, and get lost with. This guide was created to help you navigate your way into adventure.
Server Etiquette (please read)
In addition to the Server Rules, there is a "server etiquette" that we observe to keep the experience courteous and rewarding for everyone. Here's some guidelines:
Getting settled on the servers: All new players must start on the Viking Playground. Your first character’s name should match your Discord name and vice versa. When you are ready to log in, make sure to post in #playground-chat and tag @Guild of Carers & Innkeepers so you can be greeted by fellow Vikings who will escort you to safety, give you a tour and offer you a "starter pack": often of troll or bronze armor and weapons from the donation chests in Nyomi (our starter village), and food and a bed at the Inn. We recommend you use this gear to start contributing to the community, and either mine for the resources you need for your late game gear or "earn your keep" by contributing in other ways if you use materials from the community.
Taking what you need and giving back what you can: This is the moto for Nyomi. The town has a fully upgraded stocked workshop and kitchen in the Tavern. Here you will find most everything you will need to get you started. Please feel free to use the resources but only take what you need. This will allow you to go and explore and gather the things you will require to start out on your own or join a settlement. Please be mindful of it and take materials within reason. During their time in Nyomi most of our new members go out and gather resources to restock the workshop and Tavern. This will let you build up some of your skills and help Nyomi keep stocked for the next new member. This is not required but greatly appreciated.
Location tracking: Although not mandatory, we encourage you to turn on your location tracking, as it can be handy sometimes if you are stuck or need help. Or if your greeting party is trying to meet you on your first log in!
Portals and community Portal hubs: On the Viking Playground Server, we have two main portal hubs. In the Elder portal hub you will find all settlement (ie. 2+ players base) portals on the ground floor and second floor, and boss locations, community farms and builds in the basement. Those community farms are there for everyone to use, just follow the same principle of courtesy as in Nyomi and replant what you took. Our second portal hub is Portalia, which contains our members’ personal portals. We ask that you only place one personal portal in this hub. If you are within a settlement, please place only 1 portal to get to the settlement and build personal portals/hubs in your settlement rather than the main portal hubs.
Freedom to Explore: We encourage you to explore and adventure. This is the reason Jiroc prefers a "Freedom to Explore" policy. No player should be policing another player about where they go. Exploring other people's builds is one of the best things about being on a multiplayer server. If you do visit someone's build please be respectful. Adhere to signage, and do not try to circumvent wards, doors or walled in areas. Don't steal or move things. That said, please explore and be inspired by the builds out there.
Finding others to adventure with: We accept all playing styles of fighter, builder, farmer, helper, etc., alone or in teams, and want you to have fun and find community. To that end we encourage, but it is certainly optional, to attend community events and play together with diverse players from all around the world. Most events will be posted in the event calendar (top left of the Discord menu) and in #events. Jump in Voice Chat when you can, that's where the fun happens! And feel free to reach your to fellow Tribe members whenever you want a buddy to go on an adventure with, or need some help with anything. You can also post messages in the appropriate chat channels that your interested in joining in a group to go and explore.
Resources, the Resource Server and The Great Folding: Any and all resources may be harvested on the Viking Playground, but we do ask that you are mindful around other people’s bases and encampments as they may be using them as decoration. We are also very lucky that we have a Resource Server to explore and gather resources on. Every two weeks our resource server is folded into nothingness and a new world appears. This gives you a chance to explore a new world every two weeks. Usually when this happens our community gets together and disassembles our community hotel and rebuild it on the new seed. Also, usually at the same time some mischief is afoot and will need to be taken care of. If you're interested, hop into the resource server chat about a half hour before the Folding. We meet in the basement of the Elder hub on the Playground server to get organized. We hope to see you there.
Community map & Finding a spot to build: Before picking a location to build, please make sure you first check for other builds nearby, on the community cartography table and by looking around with your Draw Distance at the max to make sure you’re not building within rendering distance from any other player builds (see Rule #7 of Server Rules). The community master map is read-only for players and updated by Community Managers in both Nyomi and the Elder Hub. If you are building a base, farm, outpost, or a location you wish to make public (and by extension, reserve that location for building), please tag @COMMUNITY MANAGER with a picture of the location. If you no longer wish to retain ownership of a base, build, etc., please notify @COMMUNITY MANAGER as we can help you "recycle" the build.
Getting help: If you have any concerns, questions, or suggestions, don't hesitate to reach out to other players for help, or tag @HELPER in one of the text chats. That's what we're here for! See section below for more information on Staff.
Navigating Discord
On Discord all information is divided into categories and once you become a Tribe Member many more areas will be available to you.
Each category contains multiple channels. The channels are there for different purposes; some provide information, while others let you chat or upload pictures. There are also sections that provide you a place to voice chat with our other members.
DISCORD CATEGORIES
Welcome: In this area you will find our Discord rules, a general news channel and a notification section.
Join our gaming servers: Information on how to join, and FAQ.
Jiroc’s Stuff: A place where you will discover all things Jiroc. This is the place to discover his videos, important links, the podcast, and Jiroc merchandise.
General Chat: A section available to anyone who joins Jiroc’s Discord server.
Member Things: This section is only visible to Tribe Members and contains the most important information for members. This includes announcements, Haldor’s shop information, events and much more. It is worth taking a few minutes to explore this area. You can also sign up for specific roles in #role-call, to get notified/tagged for certain Guilds or Clans.
Member Chats: This is where all the Tribe Members can chat and share pictures. If you’re into roleplaying, awesome Valheim builds, sharing videos, or our community barter trade system check this section out.
Servers: Each of our servers has its own section. Each server has an information and chat channel and some of the servers have a section to upload pictures of your places of interest (POI) finds. Also, each server has several voice chat channels, so you can talk to other players online on that server.
You can check for pinned messages in each channel, as well as use the handy search function with keywords if you're looking for something specific.
Finally, if you ever need quick access to information, the following Discord commands can be typed in chat:
/server-rules
/discord-rules
/mods
/guilds
/clans
/settlements
/help-me
/member-page
Connecting to the Gaming servers for the first time
Make sure you check the rules of each server in the relevant #server-info Discord channel before logging in for the first time, as some require you to create separate characters with a naming convention, or mods to be installed. These info channels would contain the Server IP, alternatively you can post /server-ip in Discord to get the list of IPs.
All new players must start on the Viking Playground. Your first character’s name should match your Discord name and vice versa. When you are ready to log in, make sure to post in #playground-chat and tag @Guild of Carers & Innkeepers for someone to greet you and help you get settled. Always ask in chat if you have any questions or need help, the whole Tribe is there to help!
Installing and Using Mods
One of the most frequent questions new players ask is are mods allowed or required? The answer to this is twofold. Client-side approved mods are allowed on all Jiroc’s servers but some of the Seasonal Servers may require mods in order to play. On all others no mods are needed. CLICK HERE to see currently allowed Mods.
HOW TO INSTALL MODS:
1. Downloading the Mod Manager:
The first step to installing mods is to install the Thunderstore r2modman mod manager. Click on the link below and you will be directed to the Mod Manager download page:
Thunderstore Mod Manager (overwolf.com)
Once there you should see a red box that says download, click there. When your download is complete you can then open the .exe file. This will install the program and create a shortcut on your desktop.
2. Creating a profile in the mod manager:
After the program is started, in the middle of your screen you should see a CREATE New button. This will allow you to create a user profile. You will be required to give this profile a name.
3. Installing the mods:
Now that you have created your profile Make sure that it is highlighted then click SELECT PROFILE. It should say: "Looks like you don't have any mods installed".
The easiest way to download the mods is to use Jiroc’s handy dandy mod spreadsheet. For each individual mod you will find a link for the Thunderstore and Vortex mod managers. No searching required. When you click on the link it will take you to the mods information page. There you will find information about the mod and if you scroll down you will see the install with the mod manager button. Make sure that you have your mod manager started and a profile selected before clicking.
Once you are done installing all your mods you're ready to begin playing. In the mod manager near the top, you will see the start modded button. Click on that and you should be ready to go. If you're still having trouble, please feel free to ask for help using the @HELPER in the chat rooms.
Getting Help
JIROC’S STAFF
As our community grows, we have evolved our Staff roles to help run the servers and keep the community fun for everyone. We have 3 distinct roles:
ADMINS help Jiroc run day-to-day operations: they help with various aspects of managing the Discord servers as well as gaming servers, events, admin records, etc. Admins are also responsible for keeping the community safe and accessible for all members.
COMMUNITY MANAGERS help with Discord engagement and moderation, community/server events and communication to players. They help keep our community engaging and fun in between Admin events and Seasonal server launches. You can also go to them in case of any issues or concerns.
HELPERS are crucial to keeping our community healthy and friendly. They help screen new applicants and potential members, and support with the onboarding process for these new players joining the community. They help us recruit and retain great players and grow our Tribe!
WHERE TO GET HELP
If you find yourself in a pickle in game and need help from other players, best place to ask is in the server text or voice chats, or /s (shout) in game to whoever is online. Everyone is super helpful and before long you will have back-up, or answers to your question.
If your question is a bit more sensitive just ask and tag in a chat channel for a @HELPER to contact you, it’ll ping all Staff members and whoever is available at the time will approach you.
If you need Admin help for lost items due to server glitches or any other matter requiring Admin power, you can tag @ADMIN on Discord.
If you have any event ideas or suggestions for improving Discord or the experience on the servers, chat to our @COMMUNITY MANAGERs who can help facilitate. Your suggestions are always welcome!
